Relais Villa Vittoria

A small relais on the western shore at Laglio, ten minutes north of Cernobbio, with the hill behind it and the lake directly in front. I have photographed three weddings here, a bridal editorial, and filmed one of the days — which makes it the venue on this site I can talk about with the fewest guesses.

The ceremony, the aperitivo, dinner and the dancing all happen inside the same set of gates, and your guests sleep upstairs. There is no transfer to build the day around, no coach to count people onto, and nobody to lose between one place and the next.

That changes what the day feels like. It stops behaving like an event with a schedule and starts behaving like a very long dinner with the people you actually like — which is also, not coincidentally, the kind of day that photographs best.

Around twenty to thirty guests is where this house is at its best. Forty fits without it feeling crowded. It is not a venue for a hundred and it does not pretend to be, and the couples who choose it are choosing that on purpose.

Practical Laglio, Lake Como
Where it is
Laglio, on the western shore, about ten minutes north of Cernobbio and forty from Como. Milan Malpensa is roughly an hour and a quarter away.
The shape of the day
One place, no transfers. Everything happens between the terrace, the garden and the water, which is why the timeline here has more slack in it than a lake wedding usually does.
The light
The hill is behind the house and the lake is in front of it, so the sun leaves the terrace before it leaves the water. The half hour after that is the best light of the day and it is very easy to spend it eating.
What I have shot here
Three weddings, one bridal editorial and one film — in July, in June twice and in late September, which between them cover most of the season. A fourth couple married across the water at the Balbianello and came back here by boat for dinner, and a fifth started an engagement session on this terrace before we went on down the lake.

Everything on this page comes from days I photographed there. For the house’s own rules, capacity and availability, ask the venue.
