How a commission runs Five stages

The first letter

You write. I read it properly, and I answer as a person rather than as a brochure — whether the date is free, whether the day sounds like something I can serve well, and what I would want to know next.

The year before

We talk about the shape of the day long before we talk about photographs. Where the light falls at the hour you want to marry, how long a walk between two places really takes, where the noise will be. Most of what makes a day photograph well is decided here, in a calendar, months before I lift a camera.

The morning

I arrive early and quietly. The first hour is not about pictures. It is about becoming part of the room so that by afternoon nobody is performing for me.

The hours that matter

I do not run a shot list. I watch, I move, and I intervene rarely — and when I do it is to move a person two steps into better light, not to arrange them into a photograph they would not otherwise have been in.

Afterwards

A first set within twenty-four to forty-eight hours, depending on the collection, and the full gallery within thirty to forty-five days. Edited by me, in one pass, so the collection reads as one day rather than as four hundred separate decisions.

I do not
rearrange
your day

I do not stop a celebration to rebuild it. I do not ask for the first kiss again. I do not hand you a list of poses copied from someone else’s wedding, and I do not photograph a day as though it were a catalogue of its own details.

This is not modesty about the craft. It is where the craft goes: into preparation, into position, into knowing which thirty seconds of an eight-hour day will never come back.
