An afternoon in Laguna: the village first — the gelateria, the arcades, a green telephone box — then the bluff path, and then down onto Treasure Island for the last hour of light and the arch in the rock. Six months later I photographed the same two people getting married on Lake Como.

What an hour
in December
is actually for
Nobody needs engagement photographs. What a couple needs is one low-stakes hour in front of the person who will be three feet away from them on the most-watched day of their life — and to find out, before it counts, that it is not an ordeal.
It is also where I learn how the two of them are: who leads, who laughs first, which one needs to be left alone for thirty seconds. On the wedding day none of that has to be worked out in front of a hundred guests.
