An ochre villa,
and a long table
under the lights

Villa di Nozzole · Chianti, Tuscany

The longest evening of the year, spent almost entirely outdoors: a ceremony in the shade of the trees, dinner at one table laid down the length of the garden, and a floor under festoon lights that nobody left until it was properly dark, which in June takes its time.

The villa is the colour of the hill it sits on, and it was used exactly twice: once to get dressed in, once to walk out of. Everything else happened in the garden.

Which is the argument for a June wedding in Tuscany, and also its risk: the light holds until ten, and by then the day has been going on for so long that people have stopped behaving like guests and started behaving like family.
