A white car,
and a rotunda
Vellano Estate · Chino Hills, California
A February wedding in the hills east of Los Angeles: a white sixties sedan under the portico, a first look indoors before anyone else was awake to it, and a ceremony under the estate’s rotunda with the valley behind it. Black tie, and a room that did not sit down again after nine.

A ceremony
with a
valley in it
Vellano sits on a ridge, and the rotunda at the end of its lawn frames the hills rather than the building. That is unusual and it is the whole reason to marry there: the photographs of the ceremony have a landscape in them, not a marquee.
It also means the light behaves like the light on a hill — hard at four, gone at six. The portraits here were made in the twenty-five minutes between those two facts.
