February, and
the beach to
themselves
St Patrick Catholic Church · Carlsbad, California
A February wedding at Carlsbad: a church with a timber roof and a hundred feet of clear window, then twenty minutes up the coast to Encinitas — a wide empty beach, dune fencing, a concrete sea wall — and back for a reception that ran late. Nobody else was on the sand.

What winter
light does
to a dress
A wedding dress in July sun is a problem: the fabric blows out before the face is exposed. In February the sun sits low all afternoon and the light comes along the beach rather than down onto it, which is why the lace in these frames has any texture at all.
It also means an hour of portraits is genuinely an hour. In August the same coast gives you fifteen usable minutes and a queue of people waiting for them.
