A white suit,
and a wall of
bougainvillea
A church, and a house on the hill · Southern California
A white suit, a cathedral train, a church full of flowers, and afterwards a house on a hillside with bougainvillea over the front of it and papel picado strung across the drive. The portraits were made against an ivy wall in the last hour.

An ivy wall
is better
than a
backdrop
The house had one thing worth everything else on the property: a long wall of ivy with bougainvillea coming through it, in shade for most of the afternoon. Shade against colour is the whole trick — the faces are lit by the sky and the background does the work.
So most of the portraits here are made along ten metres of one wall. Nobody had to be driven anywhere, and the light never had to be argued with.
