An hour of California
light, and cypresses

Richard Nixon Presidential Library · Yorba Linda

Yorba Linda has an avenue of cypresses that would not embarrass Tuscany, a colonnade the length of a city block, and a rose garden that turns the colour of the dress at about six. We had an hour in it. Most of these photographs are from the last twenty minutes.

The Library’s gardens were built for people to walk slowly through, which is exactly what a portrait hour needs and almost never gets. There is a pergola of stone columns running the length of the rose garden, a reflecting pool at the end of it, and no gate to negotiate between one and the other.

That matters more than it sounds. An hour of portraits spent walking between locations is not an hour of portraits. Here nobody had to drive anywhere, and the light did the rest.
