White on white,
and then a wall
of flowers
Fillmore Chapel by Wedgewood Weddings · Fillmore, California
A white chapel at Fillmore, an hour north of Los Angeles, on the first Tuesday of January: a white suit, a white ball gown, and an afternoon that stayed in that register until the doors opened on a reception built around a wall of pink flowers. The portraits were made on the lawn in the last half hour of sun.

One colour,
and what
to do with it
Photographing white on white on white is a problem before it is a pleasure: there is nothing for the eye to hold on to and no contrast to shape a face. The answer is not more light. It is standing where the wall gives you a shadow.
So most of these frames are made against the chapel’s own architecture — the arch, the dark green door, the recessed entrance — and the colour arrives later, all at once, in a room where the whole back wall is flowers.
