A courtyard,
and fireworks
after the cake
Borgo Sant’Ambrogio · Tuscany
Black tie in a Tuscan borgo, with the hills doing the decorating. The ceremony was outdoors under an arch of flowers, dinner was in the courtyard between the old buildings, and the cake was followed, without warning, by fireworks.

A courtyard
is a room
with no roof
Borgo Sant’Ambrogio is a village more than a house, which means dinner happens between walls that were built for other reasons entirely — and the tables end up in the shape the buildings allow, not the shape a plan wanted.
It photographs the way a piazza photographs: everybody in one enclosure, everybody visible to everybody else, and no corner of the evening happening out of sight.
