A frescoed room
in Volterra, and
a ring on the hill
Borgo Pignano · Volterra, Tuscany
Two days above the Val d’Era: a welcome dinner at the borgo on the first evening, and on the second a civil ceremony inside Volterra’s frescoed council chamber, a line of vintage Citroëns down the hill, and dinner under the loggia until the tables were cleared for dancing.

An estate, and
a town, and
eleven miles
between them
Borgo Pignano stands on its own ridge with nothing around it but its own fields, which is what the drone frames are for: from the ground you cannot see that the place is an island. The welcome dinner and the wedding dinner both happened there, under the same loggia, twenty-four hours apart.
The ceremony did not. It was held in Volterra, in a room whose vaults are painted and whose walls carry six hundred years of coats of arms, and the drive between the two is half an hour of the best landscape in Tuscany. Which is why the portraits were made on the way, and not on the lawn.
