A borgo,
and a town
to marry in.
Borgo Pignano
A restored borgo on a ridge above the Val d’Era, about twenty minutes from Volterra and an hour and a quarter from Florence. September 2023: a welcome dinner the evening before, the ceremony down in Volterra itself, and dinner back up here under the loggia.

The ceremony
is not on
the estate
This is a two-place day, and the drive between them is the best hour of it. The ceremony happens in Volterra, in a frescoed chamber in the town, and the cars wait in the square outside while the whole party comes down the steps into it.
Most venues would call that a logistical problem. It is the opposite: an hour of a wedding day spent walking through a walled Etruscan town instead of standing on a lawn is an hour that photographs like nothing else in Tuscany.
Volterra and the rest of Tuscany- Where it is
- On the ridge above the Val d’Era, about twenty minutes from Volterra and an hour and a quarter from Florence. Pisa is the nearer airport.
- The shape of the day
- Welcome dinner on the estate, ceremony down in Volterra, drive back up, dinner under the loggia. Build the transfer in properly — it is worth photographing, not worth rushing.
- Best months
- May, June and September. This is the emptier, hotter half of Tuscany and September suits it best.
- What I have shot here
- One wedding, in September 2023.
Everything on this page comes from days I photographed there. For the house’s own rules, capacity and availability, ask the venue.
