The blue came
off a wall

The palette for this shoot was not chosen from a card. Somebody stood in one of the villa’s boudoir rooms, looked at the eighteenth-century frescoes on the wall, and took the blue out of them. Everything else — stationery, ribbon, the lace on the shoes, the icing on the cake — followed that one decision.

A room you

Geggiano was a farmhouse in the fourteenth century and became this in 1768 — a villa with a private chapel, a formal garden and a small green amphitheatre cut into it. In 1790 the family commissioned Ignazio Moder to paint the entrance gallery with the twelve months of the year, and it is still there, along with rooms of Veneziano Rustico furniture and French wallpaper that has never been taken down.
Bertolucci filmed Stealing Beauty here in 1995, which is how most people have seen the place without knowing it. For a photographer the useful fact is simpler: almost every room is lit from one side by a tall window, and the walls do the rest.
