The groom with his fist in the air walking out of the chapel, the bride laughing beside him

He didn’t want
his picture taken

Villa Pozzolo · Montaione, Florence, Tuscany

Steven said it plainly, months before the wedding: he does not enjoy having his picture taken. Alexandra wrote afterwards that she is awkward in front of a camera too. He still came out of the chapel with his fist in the air, and by eleven that night he was under a limbo pole in front of sixty people.

The welcome dinner · 19 September

The estate's chapel seen through the villa doorway
One long table under the trees
The estate's chapel, at the end of the cypresses
The drive, the evening before
Walking down to the chapel
Under the arch
The invitation, the perfume and the vow books
Her bouquet, on red velvet
The dress, hanging in the library
Him, getting ready
His jacket, on the piano stool
I am so awkward in front of the camera, and he made me feel so comfortable.

Nobody

Villa Pozzolo is a working estate in the hills above Montaione, with its own chapel two hundred metres from the front door and its own kitchen behind it. What is unusual is the rest: the hair and make-up, the trio that played through dinner, the painter making watercolours during the aperitif, the games on the lawn — all of it came from the villa.

That changes a day more than it sounds like it should. Nobody drives anywhere. There is no hour to be managed between the ceremony and the aperitif, because the aperitif is fifty steps from the chapel. The whole thing happens inside one field, which is why the photographs of it are so unhurried.

He was supposed to be at our welcome dinner for two hours and I think he was there closer to four. I asked if we could have a sneak peek within the first week and thought we would get ten pictures. The next day we received over fifty.
