Above Rome,
behind a wall

Villa Aurelia · Rome, Lazio

June in Rome: a morning in a hotel off the river, and then the Janiculum — a walled garden at the top of the hill with the whole city underneath it, hedges tall enough to lose people in, and a dinner under the trees that went on until the band had packed up.

Hedges, and
what they
are for

Villa Aurelia is a walled garden on the highest point in Rome, and the hedges are the reason it works: they are tall enough to make corridors, so two hundred people can be in the same garden and still find themselves alone in it.

Which is also how the portraits here were made. Not at a viewpoint over the city — that frame exists and it is on this page once — but in the green corridors, in the ten minutes between the ceremony ending and anybody noticing they had gone.
