Villa Agape stands on the hill under San Miniato, which means the city is not a view from it — it is the background of every photograph you make there. A May wedding, a tan suit, a red car, and the Duomo behind them all afternoon.

A city as
a background

Photographing a couple with Florence behind them is easier to do badly than well. The city is so recognisable that it takes over: put it in the middle of the frame and the photograph becomes a postcard with two people standing in front of it.

So it sits at the edge here, or out of focus, or below them — and the frames that use it head-on are the two that earn it. The rest of the day happened in the gardens, which are formal, walled and much older than the view.
