Torre a Cona
A seventeenth-century estate about twenty-five minutes east of Florence, with a cypress walk running out from the house, a loggia deep enough to eat under, and enough ground that the welcome dinner, the ceremony and dinner all happen in different parts of the same garden. I photographed a wedding and filmed it here in September 2025.
Two evenings,
not one
The evening before is part of this place. There is a loggia with the valley in front of it, and a welcome dinner under it means that by the morning of the wedding nobody in the family is being photographed by a stranger.
It also spreads the day out. Torre a Cona is big enough that the ceremony, the drinks and dinner can each have their own part of the garden, so nothing has to be turned around while a hundred people wait in a corridor.
Florence, in general- Where it is
- About twenty-five minutes east of Florence, in the hills where the city stops and Chianti starts. Close enough that guests can stay in town, far enough that you cannot hear it.
- The shape of the day
- A welcome dinner under the loggia the evening before, the ceremony under the arches, drinks in the garden, and one long table lit after dark. Nobody leaves the estate between any of them.
- Best months
- May, June and September. September here means the ceremony sits in the last real warmth of the day and dinner begins in the dark, which is the better version of it.
